Summer Break: Time To Get Those Wisdom Teeth Removed

Do you want to get your wisdom teeth removed but don’t know when it’s best to do so? Why not at the start of summer vacation? You can get them taken out and still have the whole summer to enjoy after your recovery is through.

Having your wisdom teeth removed is an inevitability for many people in their late teens to mid 20s. Regardless of why you might need them extracted, consider the benefits of having the procedure now, right at the beginning of summer break.

Here at Ueno Center Dental Specialists, we offer safe, effective, and simple tooth extractions for those with troublesome wisdom teeth. Our founder, Jeremy K. Ueno, DMD, as well as all of our other providers understand the discomfort associated with wisdom teeth and recommend getting this treatment as soon as possible so you can get back to your day-to-day life.

Why we remove wisdom teeth

Wisdom tooth removal is extremely common in the United States. According to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, wisdom teeth that have become diseased or are at risk of becoming diseased should be surgically managed. But what does that mean?

Usually, wisdom teeth have to be removed because they’ve become impacted. In most cases, this means that they cannot fully erupt through the gumline because of surrounding teeth, crooked growth patterns, or something else.

Sometimes, wisdom teeth that haven’t erupted at all can be impacted and cause problems.

The problems associated with impacted wisdom teeth can include pain and discomfort as well as the increased potential for infection. Unhealthy wisdom teeth can also cause other problems, such as gum disease, cysts, and damage and decay to nearby teeth.

Should you have your wisdom teeth removed?

In some cases, wisdom teeth don’t cause problems, but in many, they do. To determine if it’s time to consider removing your wisdom teeth, do you:

  • Notice discomfort and pain in the area of your wisdom teeth?
  • Have a small jawbone and worry your wisdom teeth could crowd your other teeth?
  • Notice any damage that the growing teeth may have already caused?
  • Find it’s become harder to keep your teeth and gums clean and free from bacteria?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, it’s time to schedule a consultation to determine if removing your wisdom teeth is right for you.

Choose summer break to start the healing process

If you choose to get your wisdom teeth removed, it could take as long as two weeks to feel fully recovered and ready to return to your regular activities.

Having your wisdom teeth extracted during the school year could make you fall behind in your studies. And if you schedule the appointment for spring or winter break, your recovery could take all of your time off.

That’s why the start of summer break may be the ideal time to get your wisdom teeth removed. Have them taken out right at the start of the break, heal quickly, and still have the whole summer to enjoy yourself without missing any classes.
