Your Guide to Preparing for Same-Day Teeth

To those who’ve only known about the possibility of temporary crowns and multiple appointments, same-day teeth is a dream come true. But you still need to put in the necessary preparation before your procedure.

The same-day teeth procedure goes by many names: Teeth-in-a-Day, full arch dental implants, All-on-X (AOX). But whatever you call it, it seems like a miracle to many of our patients. That’s because they walk in missing a number and sometimes all of their teeth and walk out with a brand new set of pearly whites.

But what does same-day teeth entail? And how can you properly prepare for it?

Ueno Center Dental Specialists has always been on the cutting edge when it comes to dental procedures. Jeremy K. Ueno, DMD, and the rest of our team want to offer you the best treatments possible as well as the necessary information about preparing before the process begins.

How same-day teeth works and why you should prepare

Teeth-in-a-Day is similar to regular crown placement with a few notable exceptions:

  • The material we use to create the crowns
  • The time it takes for you to go through the entire process

Crown preparation used to involve a middle step, which involved the use of temporary crowns. But now, we can cut this step from the process. The temporary crown gave dental teams time to create a permanent one.

But thanks to material like CEREC, a kind of strong porcelain, and to technology like 3D printing, we’re able to get the process done in a single day. Whether you have one tooth to replace or several, this makes a big difference.

Still, the process does require some understanding and preparation. Just because it happens in one day doesn’t mean it’s simple.

Getting ready for AOX: a step-by-step process

We recommend preparing before you schedule your appointment as well as understanding our side of the prep work so you have the full picture, before your procedure.

Step 1: Consultation

First, you need a consultation with one of our board-certified periodontists. They can determine if you’re even a good candidate for same-day teeth. Your oral health is a key factor, including whether you have any periodontal troubles or if you have the jawbone density to support implants.

Step 2: Imaging and scans

We may decide to do certain imaging and scans to ensure the physical health of your mouth, surviving teeth, gums, and jawbone. Certain digital images can help us see issues that may not be visible to the naked eye.

In addition, imaging and scans can also help us decide how we will build your implants. Every patient is different, so for some, these may take place on the day of the procedure, but depending on your needs, some imaging may need to be done beforehand.

Step 3: Prepare for your procedure

We may give you certain instructions about what to do the night, day, or even several weeks before your procedure. These can include fasting the night before and not taking certain supplements or medications two weeks beforehand.

While AOX is an amazing option for those who don’t want to deal with multiple procedures and temporary crowns, the time you spend in the office may be a little longer than if you went the more traditional route. This is especially true if we need to build your permanent crown on the day of your procedure.

Step 4: Prepare for your post-procedure

Downtime and recovery is a necessary part of getting same-day teeth. This means taking a week off of work, eating soft foods, taking medications, and icing the area as prescribed.

Those who follow their post-procedure rules usually see a faster recovery, so plan for at least two weeks of taking it easy.
