Laser Therapy Q & A

How is laser therapy different than gum surgery?

Traditionally, your periodontist would address gum disease and “ailing” implants by cutting and suturing your gums to decrease the pocket depth and address the infection. This surgery is not only painful, but it can also take time to recover from. Today, Ueno Center Dental Specialists offers advanced laser therapies to correct common periodontal issues — with no scalpels, no sutures, and minimal to no downtime.

What is LANAP laser therapy?

Laser-assisted new attachment procedure (LANAP) is the only FDA-cleared laser protocol for pain-free gum disease treatment. LANAP uses a highly specialized PerioLase® laser to target and kill the bacteria that cause gum disease while removing damaged gum tissue and reattaching healthy tissue. The treatment is not only less invasive than traditional gum disease surgery, but it also isn’t painful. In fact, many people can go back to work the same day!

How is LANAP laser therapy different than traditional gum surgery?

Traditional surgery requires cutting and suturing your gums, often causing a great deal of pain and the need for pain medication. LANAP doesn’t require surgical cuts. As a result, the laser treatment causes considerably less discomfort, so you rarely need postoperative pain relievers.

With minimal recovery time, you also can return to your daily routine almost immediately. Other benefits include:

  • Prevents tooth sensitivity
  • Preserves natural smile
  • Kills bacteria
  • Reduces inflammation

The laser therapy also works to stimulate your root surface, promoting regeneration and attachment of your gums. As a result, LANAP may save teeth that were previously considered hopeless.

What is LAPIP laser surgery?

Laser-assisted peri-implant procedure (LAPIP) is the only FDA-cleared laser therapy to treat ailing dental implants. LAPIP addresses cases where a new implant becomes infected under your gum line. This infection may lead to bone loss around the implant and, sometimes, a loss of the implant itself.

Until recently, the only treatment for a troubled implant was either extensive surgery or removing and replacing the implant. Now, Ueno Center Dental Specialists offers LAPIP, which uses laser energy to treat implant-related infections and stop the progression of the disease.

As an added benefit, laser therapy may encourage new, healthy bone to regenerate around the implant, making it even more secure.

The team at Ueno Center Dental Specialists also may recommend LAPIP as an initial treatment to stop the infection and create a healthier site for other dental interventions and treatments, including bone or gum grafting.

Not everyone is a candidate for laser surgery, and your Ueno Center doctor may recommend traditional gum surgery over laser gum surgery in certain cases.
